Letter from the Chairman of the Board

Dear Friends,

If you are in the Jerusalem area this Shabbat, Parshiot Behar-Bechukotai and Shabbat Mevorchim, we invite you to join us as we celebrate "Shabbat Sh'lom Yerushalayim" in honor of the upcoming 43rd anniversary of the reunification of the Capital City of the State of Israel. Chief Chazzan Chaim Adler will officiate on Friday Evening (7:10 PM) and on Shabbat morning (7:55 AM) accompanied by The Jerusalem Great Synagogue Choir conducted by Elli Jaffe.  On Shabbat morning, we will be privileged to hear Divrei Torah from the Chief Rabbi of Haifa, Rabbi She'ar Yashuv Cohen, who was captured and imprisoned by the Jordanians in the 1948 battle for the Old City of Jerusalem. There will be a Kiddush sponsored by The Jerusalem Great Synagogue following the Shabbat morning service.  Our thanks to the "Iggud Batei Knesset B'Yisrael" headed by Eliezer Sheffer, for their efforts in promoting the observance of this special Shabbat in Synagogues throughout the world.

As I noted last week, in cooperation with "Moreshet Hamishpat B' Yisrael" The Jerusalem Great Synagogue will host a Shavuot Night of Torah Study beginning at 11:15 PM on Tuesday evening May 18th, on the interaction of Jewish Law with contemporary issues.  The shiurim are in Hebrew and the speakers will be: the Rishon L'Zion, Israel's Chief Rabbi Shlomo Moshe Amar; the Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv-Yaffo Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau; Attorney Yaakov Weinroth; Professor Nahum Rakover; Dr. Michael Vigoda; The Av Beit Din Rabbani of Jerusalem Rabbi Eliyahu Abargel; The head of the Tzurba Mi'Rabbanan Institute Rabbi Ben Zion Algazi. The complete list of topics will be found in the Hebrew section of The Jerusalem Great Synagogue's website under the category of Upcoming Events (Iruim K'rovim).

We are delighted this Friday evening to again invite Lone Soldiers to join in our Leil Shabbat services and in the delicious Shabbat Dinner which follows. These Dinners are sponsored by our Synagogue and The Leo V. Berger Fund – Harvey Schwartz, President and Sigmund Kassap, Vice President, our Benefactors. We thank our partners in these Shabbat programs: The Michael Levin Center for Lone Soldiers, Nefesh b'Nefesh, the Yeshurun Central Synagogue and The American Jewish War Veterans Post 180- Jerusalem. We also thank those who support these efforts by their donations, helping to show our appreciation to these young men and women who have become Olim and volunteered to serve in the IDF.  Our cost per soldier is $30.  We welcome your contributions to assist us in covering the expenses for this very special project. If you are a Lone Soldier and want to attend this Shabbat's Dinner, please register by this Thursday, May 6th, by clicking on the appropriate box at the website  www.lonesoldiercenter.com  or by contacting Daniel Charter either by phone at  054-206-3321 or via e-mail at: daniel@lonesoldiercenter.com
