Dear Friends,
We
are delighted to announce the addition of Yael Levontin to our
Professional staff. She will serve as Membership and Special Projects
Coordinator. In that capacity, she will soon be reaching out to you to
join The Jerusalem Great Synagogue through Supporting Membership. For a
modest annual fee (500 NIS in Israel or $180 for those abroad), you
will be partnering with us, the Synagogue of the World. We thank those
of our readers who have already become Supporting Members. If you
haven't as yet availed yourself of that opportunity, we hope you will
respond positively to Yael's communication to you and become part of
the ever-growing family of The Jerusalem Great Synagogue.
As we have previously advised you, our next Motzaei Shabbat Social Evening and Lecture will take place at 8 PM on November 28th. The
evening will feature a dialogue between Jerusalem's Mayor, the Hon. Nir
Barkat and David Horovitz, Editor-in-Chief of The Jerusalem Post. We
thank those of you who have submitted issues that you would like
discussed during the evening's conversation and we welcome additional
e-mails from our readers with topics of a general nature you would like
covered. Please send your e-mails to us at jgs@zahav.net.il.
Those of you who have attended our programs know that we begin on time,
so please don't wait until the last minute to arrive. The program is in
English and admission is free.
The
Jerusalem Great Synagogue is hosting an evening in memory of the late
Rabbi Shlomo Goren z"l, this coming Tuesday (November 10) at 7:30 PM in
the Main Synagogue. Rabbi Goren served as Israel's Chief Rabbi from
1972-1983 and prior to that as the Chief Chaplain of the IDF
(1948-1972). He led the troops who liberated the Kotel HaMaaravi in
June 1967 and we all remember the emotional photograph of Rabbi Goren
sounding the Shofar that day at the Kotel. This year marks the 15th anniversary since his passing and the entire community is invited to join in this Memorial tribute.
Next Friday evening, November 13th,
The Jerusalem Great Synagogue and the Central Yeshurun Synagogue will
host, in our Friedler Banquet Hall, the first in a series of Shabbat
Dinners for lone soldiers. This project is Chaired by our Council
Member Tobias Berman. We thank the Center for Lone Soldiers and Nefesh
B'Nefesh, who are greatly assisting in organizing the evening. We thank
our President and his wife, Dr. Felix and Dr. Miriam Glaubach, who have
underwritten the costs for this first Dinner. If you would like to
contribute towards the costs of future such events, please e-mail us
for further information at jgs@zahav.net.il If you are a lone soldier and would like to participate, please contact Ellie Solimani of Nefesh B'Nefesh by e-mail (ellie@nbn.org.il) or Daniel Charter of the Center for Lone Soldiers at 054-206-3321.
