Dear Friends,
We express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped make the Yamim
Noraim and the Sukkot-Shemini Atzeret holidays at The Jerusalem Great Synagogue
so inspiring and memorable. Added to the
lists of those we thanked in the newsletters of the past two weeks are Rami
Abramov who led the Hoshana Rabba service, the young people who led the ruach
during the Hakafot and all who volunteered to be baalei keriah on Simchat
Torah. A special thanks to Alan
Weichselbaum who served as Gabbai at the minyamin for people from abroad
celebrating two days of Yom Tov. Mazal
Tov to our chattanim on Simchat Torah: our President Dr. Felix Glaubach
(Chattan Torah), our Vice-President Sir Ian Gainsford (Chattan Breishit), our
Vice-President Mikhail Bezeliansky (Chattan Maftir) and our Board Member Sylvain
Landau (Chattan Kol Hanearim). May we always be able to share such meaningful
times together.
We hope you will be able to join us this Saturday evening at 8:00 PM in our Friedler Banquet Hall for the
opening program of the Motzaei Shabbat Social Evening and Lecture Series for
5770. Our speaker is the very popular
Caroline Glick, Deputy Managing Editor of the Jerusalem Post, author of
"Shackled Warrior" and award-winning journalist. Her topic is "Reflections on the Obama
Administration and the Future of US-Israel Relations." The topic is one which should interest every
Israeli and especially those with ties to the United
States. Admission is free, a
question-and-answer session follows the formal presentation and refreshments
are available. The entire community is
invited to participate. This series is sponsored in cooperation with The
Association of Americans and Canadians in Israel (AACI); The Orthodox
Union-Israel (0U); Nefesh B'Nefesh; Young Israel of Rehavia (Hanassi); Yeshurun
Central Synagogue, American Israeli Action Coalition, (AIAC), Council of Young
Israel Rabbis in Israel and Rabbinical Council of America.-Israel.
Please note a change in date for the November program in this series. The
program will be held on November 28 (instead of November 14). It will feature a dialogue (in English)
between Jerusalem's Mayor, the Hon.
Nir Barkat and David Horovitz, Editor-in-Chief of The Jerusalem Post. The program will cover many topics and will
certainly be of interest to all of us. You
are invited to submit suggestions for topics to be discussed
(www.jgs@zahav.net.il). They should be
of a general nature and not personal issues which should be directed to the
appropriate agencies within the Municipality. Please reserve the date on your
calendar.
We congratulate our good
friend and neighbor Rabbi Professor Shubert Spero on the publication of his
newest volume: "Aspects of Rabbi Joseph Dov Soloveitchik's Philosophy of
Judaism- an Analytic Approach" published by Ktav. We applaud Rabbi Spero for this important
work dealing with the ideas of one of the greatest Jewish thinkers and Torah
scholars of the 20th century.
