Letter from the Chairman of the Board

Dear Friends

As we prepare for our anniversary Shabbat on August 7-8 (Parashat Ekev), we ask our regular congregants, Major Donors and Supporting Members to please arrive at the Synagogue early.  Once the Synagogue is filled, we will have no choice but to close the front doors and not permit entrance to the building.  On Friday evening, we are beginning Mincha at 6:55 PM and on Shabbat morning we will start at 7:40 AM.  In addition to Chief Chazzan Chaim Adler and our Choir conducted by Elli Jaffe, guest Chazzan Yitzhak Meir Helfgot and the Yuval Choir conducted by Dr. Mordechai Sobol will officiate.  On Friday evening, we will hear divrei Torah from our Mara d'Atra Rabbi Zalman Druck and on Shabbat morning the dvar Torah will be given by Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv-Yaffo.  We look forward to seeing you inside the Synagogue on that Shabbat.  We also encourage you to bring your own Siddur and Chumash on that Shabbat if at all possible (and please make certain that you have your name and telephone number in them just in case you forgot to take them with you following the service). Shabbat Parashat Ekev at The Jerusalem Great Synagogue is dedicated in memory of the late Henry Moskowitz z"l, whose many contributions to the State of Israel and particularly to the city of Jerusalem are golden pages in the history of Israel

We remind Dedicated-Seat-Holders that this coming Sunday (August 2) is the final day for you to have your dedicated seat reserved for Rosh Hashana and/or Yom Kippur.  If you want to join us for the Yamim Noraim and wish to use your dedicated seat, please so advise us by this Sunday.

If you haven't yet joined us as Supporting Members, we hope you will send in the form and the contribution soon.  Whether you live in Israel or abroad, if you attend our services and other events during the year, we trust that you feel a responsibility to support The Jerusalem Great Synagogue so that it may continue to be available for you and for others.  The Supporting Membership Form may be found on our website.

After over twenty eight years of being an integral part of our Choir, Danny Hendrickson is taking leave as he and his wife are moving from our neighborhood to Gilo.  As a result, his brother-in-law Steve Weinstein, who has also been an integral part of the Choir for over two decades and who was hosted for most Shabbatot and Holidays by the Hendricksons, will also not be continuing in the Choir.  Each of these men has been much more than a singer during these years.  Their good humor, friendship to everyone, sincerity and assistance to the newer and younger members of the Choir were outstanding.  We wish Danny and Sue and Steve and Lois many more years of continued good health, happiness and constant nachat from their families.  We hope that, as often as their schedule permits, they will sing with our Choir and participate in our other activities.  L'hitraot!

Yasher Koach to the Chairman of our Emergency Response Committee, Dr. Raphi Jospe on the publication of his newest book "Jewish Philosophy in the Middle Ages."  The book is published by Academic Studies Press.  Inquiries may be directed to the publisher at 28 Montfern Avenue Brighton, Ma. 02135 USA.

Mazal Tov to our President and Patrons Dr. Felix and Dr. Miriam Glaubach on the birth of their twin granddaughters, Bianca Pearl Kochavia and Mazalit Raquel, and to the girls' mother Dr. Shulamit Glaubach of California. May Bianca and Mazalit go to Torah, chupah l'bnei Torah and maasim tovim and be constant sources of nachat to their family and to all Am Yisrael.

Mazal Tov to our congregants Aryeh and Rivka Ofek on the birth of their son this week.  May the baby go to brit, Torah, chupah and maasim tovim and be a constant source of nachat to his family and to all am Yisrael.  Special Mazal Tov to the baby's uncle, our congregant Meir Apfeldorfer.

Mazal Tov to our Founder Members and friends Gitta and Rachmiel Koppel on the forthcoming marriage of their grandson Mordechai Koppel to Yardanna Platt.  Mazal tov to the parents of the couple, Shira and David Koppel and Rivka and Dr. Morris Platt.  Special Mazal Tov to the maternal grandparents of the Chattan, Rabbi Dr. Michael and Chaya Shmidman.  May Mordechai and Yardanna share a long healthy and happy life together as they build their bayit ne'eman b'Yisrael.

Our condolences to our congregant Mrs. Ariella Hendler, wife of our Board Member Dr. Shmuel Hendler, on the passing of her mother, Mrs. Chava Nitzan, z"l.  May the family be comforted among the other mourners of Zion and Jerusalem and experience no further sorrow for many years to come.

Our condolences to our Founder Member and friend Alan Gover, on the passing of his mother Beatrice Shore Gover, z"l.   May the family be comforted among the other mourners of Zion and Jerusalem and experience no further sorrow for many years to come.

Guest Chazzan Yisrael Goldfrind will officiate this Friday evening (7:25 PM) and Shabbat morning Parashat Vaetchanan – Shabbat Nachamu (7:55 AM) accompanied by our Choir conducted by Elli Jaffe.  Also participating in the tefilot will be Chazzanim Nisan Pesahov and Elazar Vinograd.  We are delighted to welcome our chattan Bar Mitzvah, Michael Jacob Kiffel from Boca Raton, Florida, his parents Dr. Steven and Mrs Shirley Kiffel and the other members of their family and friends who have joined them.
