Letter from the Chairman of the Board
Dear Friends
As
we prepare for our anniversary Shabbat on August 7-8 (Parashat Ekev),
we ask our regular congregants, Major Donors and Supporting Members to
please arrive at the Synagogue early. Once the Synagogue is filled, we
will have no choice but to close the front doors and not permit
entrance to the building. On Friday evening, we are beginning Mincha
at 6:55 PM and on Shabbat morning we will start at 7:40 AM. In
addition to Chief Chazzan Chaim Adler and our Choir conducted by Elli
Jaffe, guest Chazzan Yitzhak Meir Helfgot and the Yuval Choir conducted
by Dr. Mordechai Sobol will officiate. On Friday evening, we will hear
divrei Torah from our Mara d'Atra Rabbi Zalman Druck and on Shabbat
morning the dvar Torah will be given by Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, Chief
Rabbi of Tel Aviv-Yaffo. We look forward to seeing you inside the
Synagogue on that Shabbat. We also encourage you to bring your own
Siddur and Chumash on that Shabbat if at all possible (and please make
certain that you have your name and telephone number in them just in
case you forgot to take them with you following the service). Shabbat
Parashat Ekev at The Jerusalem Great Synagogue is dedicated in memory
of the late Henry Moskowitz z"l, whose many contributions to the State
of Israel and particularly to the city of Jerusalem are golden pages in
the history of Israel
We remind Dedicated-Seat-Holders that this
coming Sunday (August 2) is the final day for you to have your
dedicated seat reserved for Rosh Hashana and/or Yom Kippur. If you
want to join us for the Yamim Noraim and wish to use your dedicated
seat, please so advise us by this Sunday.
If you haven't yet
joined us as Supporting Members, we hope you will send in the form and
the contribution soon. Whether you live in Israel or abroad, if you
attend our services and other events during the year, we trust that you
feel a responsibility to support The Jerusalem Great Synagogue so that
it may continue to be available for you and for others. The Supporting
Membership Form may be found on our website.
After over twenty
eight years of being an integral part of our Choir, Danny Hendrickson
is taking leave as he and his wife are moving from our neighborhood to
Gilo. As a result, his brother-in-law Steve Weinstein, who has also
been an integral part of the Choir for over two decades and who was
hosted for most Shabbatot and Holidays by the Hendricksons, will also
not be continuing in the Choir. Each of these men has been much more
than a singer during these years. Their good humor, friendship to
everyone, sincerity and assistance to the newer and younger members of
the Choir were outstanding. We wish Danny and Sue and Steve and Lois
many more years of continued good health, happiness and constant nachat
from their families. We hope that, as often as their schedule permits,
they will sing with our Choir and participate in our other activities.
L'hitraot!
Yasher Koach to the Chairman of our Emergency
