Letter From the Chairman of the Board

Dear Friends,

As you can see, this week's format is a bit different from that of our usual weekly newsletters.  Because Shavuot comes in mid-week, this newsletter will be for this Shabbat (Parashat Bamidbar), Shavuot and Shabbat Parashat Naso.  The time schedule for this entire period is listed below.

The Jerusalem Great Synagogue was honored this past Shabbat by the presence of Rabbi She'ar Yashuv Cohen, the Chief Rabbi of Haifa and Rebbetzin Cohen.  At the Leil Shabbat Dinner for Lone Soldiers, the Rabbi recounted some of his personal experiences as a volunteer during the War of Liberation in 1948, both before and after he was wounded and taken captive by Jordan for several months until a prisoner exchange took place between Jordan and Israel.  His talk was so inspirational that when he ended, he received a sustained standing ovation from everyone in attendance. Many of the soldiers approached him during the meal to receive a personal Bracha.  It was truly an evening to remember.  We also thank him for his divrei Torah on Shabbat morning, during which he spoke about the significance of Jewish unity and at seudah shlishit, during which he spoke about the connection between Sefer Vayikra and Sefer Bamidbar.   Of course, our gratitude is extended to Chief Chazzan Chaim Adler and our Choir conducted by Elli Jaffe, who provided us with Shabbat tefillot that were soul-stirring and beautiful.

In anticipation of Shavuot - "Z'man Matan Torateinu" we have new lettering on the two tablets of the Decalogue which is above the Aron Kodesh.  We thank the anonymous donor who made this project possible.

Please reserve Thursday evening, June 17th at 8:00 PM for a special lecture at The Jerusalem Great Synagogue to be given by Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, the Chief Rabbi of the British Commonwealth.  His topic is "Torah V'Chachma: Judaism in the World."  The Chief Rabbi is a renowned thinker, author and orator and we are honored to have him join us and our co-sponsors at The Jerusalem Great Synagogue.

As is our custom each Yom Tov, in order to accommodate those from abroad who observe two days of Yom Tov we will have special Yom Tov Sheni services in our Synagogue.  For the times of those services, please see the schedule below.

We continue to pray for the good health and immediate release of Gilad ben Aviva Schalit and the other members of the IDF still in captivity.  Please add prayers for refua sheleima for those who were injured in terrorist attacks and in the War in Gaza and for Aryeh ben Sarah Leah (Chazzan Aryeh Goldberg), Amiram ben Reina (Amiram Benshimol), Zahava bat Rachel (Zahava Meczes), Channa bat Chaya Devorah (Anna Schlesinger), Bracha Miriam bat Rachel (Miriam Sheinberg), Chaim Ariel ben Vera Devora (Ariel Sharon), Shoshana bat Miriam (Susan Shapiro),  Amit Yehuda ben Malka (Dr.Amit Schwartz), Shimon Elimelech ben Sima Rivka (Marc Weinberg), Avraham Yeshayahu ben Aviva (Avraham Yeshayahu Feiner), Shai ben Rachel (Shai Peltz), Miriam Rivkah bat Adina Leah (Miriam Strasberg), Yissachar Dov ben Peshe (Bud Silver), Moshe Avigdor ben Rivkah (Martin Herzog),  Penina Rivka Yoela bat Mirel (Penny Bowman), Avichai Avraham ben Sarah Miriam, Gitel Rivka bat Chaya Risa and Chaya Aviva Sarah bat Adel Nechama (Alexandra Morgan Talbot). May they all be blessed with a speedy and complete recovery and enjoy good health for many more years.

Mazal Tov to Nachum Nathan Sack who is celebrating his Bar Mitzvah this Shabbat at The Jerusalem Great Synagogue and to his parents Yaakov and Chava Sack of the Kiryat Hayovel neighborhood in Jerusalem.  Special Mazal Tov to older brother David Sack, currently a Yeshivat Hesder student who, during his last two High School years attended our daily Minyan each weekday morning. May Nachum continue to be a constant source of nachat to his family and to all Am Yisrael.

We thank those who, in the past several weeks, have heeded our request and have joined us as Supporting Members.  If you haven't as yet done so, we ask that you partner with us in this way.  The cost is 500 NIS or $180 per year and will give you the opportunity to be part of a unique Jewish institution serving world Jewry.
