Letter from the Chairman of the Board

Dear Friends,

We've been told that it is becoming increasingly difficult for those from outside our area to find available hotel rooms for Shabbat Parashat Ekev, the anniversary Shabbat of The Jerusalem Great Synagogue.  The Shabbat is dedicated in memory of the late Henry Moskowitz z"l, whose many contributions to the State of Israel and particularly to the city of
Jerusalem are golden pages in the history of Israel.  Joining Chief Chazzan Chaim Adler and our Choir conducted by Elli Jaffe will be guest Chazzan Yitzhak Meir Helfgot and the Yuval Choir conducted by Dr. Mordechai Sobol.  Please note that on that Friday evening, we are beginning Mincha services at the time of candle lighting (6:55 PM) and on Shabbat morning we are beginning at 7:45 AM.

The Council of Young Israel Rabbis in
Israel and the Worldwide Young Israel Movement in conjunction with The Jerusalem Great Synagogue, are sponsoring an evening of Torah study (in English) on the 4th anniversary of the disengagement from Gush Katif and Northern Shomron.  Speakers include: Rabbi Aharon Adler, Mrs. Rachel Sapperstein, Dr. Sody Namir and Mrs. Sharon Katz. The program will take place in our Synagogue this Sunday evening, July 26 at 8:00 PM. An entrance fee of 30 NIS will be collected by the Council of Young Israel Rabbis in Israel.  Doors will open at 7:15 PM.

Have you sent in your Supporting Membership application and contribution yet?  If not, please do so at your earliest convenience.  It is only fair that those who enjoy the tefilot and programs at The Jerusalem Great Synagogue feel a responsibility to support the Synagogue so that we may continue our important work.  If you cannot access the application on our website, you may write to us (POB 7924,
Jerusalem 91078) and we will be happy to send you the appropriate form.

Mazal Tov to our congregants and friends Arye and Justice Miriam Naor on the birth and brit of their grandson Noam and to his parents Michael and Ziv Naor.  May Noam grow to Torah, chupah and maasim tovim and be a constant source of nachat to his family and to all Am Yisrael.

Mazal Tov to our congregants and Supporting Members Bert and Shirley Abell on the birth and naming of their new great-granddaughter Fayge, and to her parents Nachamn and Batya Horvitz.  May Fayge grow to Torah, chupah l'ben Torah and maasim tovim and be a constant source of nachat to her family and to all Am Yisrael.  We also extend a Mazal Tov to the Abells on the engagement of their grandson Ezriel Kramer to Yocheved Brandsweger of Beitar Illit.  May the young couple go to the chupah b'shaa tova u'mutzlachat and share a long, healthy and happy life together as they build their bayit neeman b'Yisrael.

Maariv and the reading of Megilat Eicha will take place in the Main Synagogue on Wednesday evening, July 29 at
8:00 PM.  Shacharit and Kinot on Thursday morning will be at 8:00 AM  May this be the final year that we make an announcement about these Fast Days and may the words of the prophet Zecharia (8:19) be speedily fulfilled.
