Letter from the Chairman of the Board Dear Friends,
Our
thanks to those who have already returned the 5770 (2009-2010)
Supporting Membership form. As was noted in the accompanying letter, so
many people enjoy the beautiful tefillot and the many other events
throughout the year at The Jerusalem Great Synagogue. We hope that each
family feels the responsibility to partner with us and help us continue
to serve the local and the worldwide Jewish communities by becoming
Supporting Members. A copy of the letter that was sent and the
accompanying Membership form may be found on our website. If you are
unable to access it and would like us to send you a form via e-mail or
fax, you need only write your request and click on the "reply" area of
this e-mail.
Once again I remind our Dedicated-Seat-holders
that, if you haven't already done so, please advise us by Sunday,
August 2nd that you plan to use your seats for the coming Yamim
Noraim. After that date, we cannot guarantee the availability of those
seats on Rosh Hashana and/or Yom Kippur for your use.
While on
the subject of the coming year, please note the dates for our Motzaei
Shabbat Mevorchim Social Evening and Lecture Series for 5770: October
17, November 14, January 9, February 13 and March 13. The speaker and
topic of the first program will be announced in September.
Among
the many groups that are touring The Jerusalem Great Synagogue
this week, we are particularly proud to welcome Bat and Bar Mitzvah
children of parents who serve in the Israeli Police. Two groups will
be touring the Synagogue - one from Shomron and Yehuda and the other
from Central Israel. We congratulate the children and express our
thanks to their parents who work with such dedication for the benefit
of all of Israel's citizens and visitors. We are honored to welcome
Israel's Chief Rabbi, the Rishon L'Zion, Rabbi Shlomo Moshe Amar, who
will be addressing the youngsters and their parents.
We
continue to pray for the good health and immediate release of Gilad ben
Aviva Schalit. Please add prayers for refua sheleima for those who
were injured in terrorist attacks and in the War in Gaza and for Ratza

Shabbat Parashat Pinchas at The Jerusalem Great Synagogue is dedicated to the memory of the late Chazzan Tuvia Winkler, z"l.
Chazzan
Winkler was born in Hungary where his father Pinchas was a Cantor. He
was Yeshiva and musically educated and, following his Bar Mitzvah,
began conducting Synagogue services until the outbreak of World War II.
He spent the last year of the war in a forced labor camp, after which
he learned that most of his family had been killed. He left Europe and
immigrated to Australia where he chose to become a Cantor as a tribute
to his late father.
Chazzan Winkler served for seven years at
the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, and then for twenty one years
at the North Shore Synagogue in Sydney, where his reputation rapidly
spread because of his rich baritone voice, the men’s and boys’ choir
which he initiated, trained and conducted, and the warmth and
inclusiveness with which he conducted the services. He also published a
record entitled Zamru Lo. His final position in Australia was at the
South Head Synagogue, where he served for nine years before retiring,
but he was subsequently recruited by a number of Kehillot in Los
Angeles, where he traveled every year to visit his daughter. Chazzan
Winkler passed away in Sydney earlier this year.
We will be
honored this forthcoming Shabbat by the presence of his children,
Janine and Peter Lowy from Los Angeles, and our Founder Members and
Major Donors Charmaine and Stanley Roth from Sydney, many of his
grandchildren as well as other members of his family. We are grateful
to the Roth and Lowy Families for dedicating the Chazzan's Room in The
Jerusalem Great Synagogue in memory of Chazzan Winkler
May his memory always be a source of blessing to his family and all Am Yisrael.
In
recognition of this special Shabbat, Chief Chazzan Chaim Adler will
officiate on Friday evening (7:35 PM) and Shabbat morning, Parashat
Pinchas (7:55 AM) accompanied by The Jerusalem Great Synagogue Choir
conducted by Elli Jaffe. The Roth and Lowy Families invite the entire
congregation to a festive Kiddush following Shabbat morning services.
Shabbat shalom.
