THE EXPERIENCE: Cantor & Choir
Our Cantor and choir inspire congregants with a uniquely captivating and unforgettable 'Great Synagogue experience.'
The Jerusalem Great Synagogue is one of the world's chief repositories of Jewish Ashkenazic liturgical music and one of the few synagogues in the world with an internationally-acclaimed Chazzan and choir officiating on most Shabbatot and holidays throughout the year.
Its mandate is to both preserve the vast repertoire of the Cantorial and choral chants of pre-war Europe while injecting the music of modern Israel and encouraging congregational participation.
Led by the renowned Chazzan Chaim Adler, conductor Elli Jaffe and musical arranger Raymond Goldstein, our Chazzan and choir also advise other cantors and synagogue choirs throughout the world and readily share with them the musical arrangements which are prepared for our synagogue services. They also visit Jewish communities in other countries, performing in concerts and officiating at services in order to further the knowledge and appreciation of our liturgy among new generations of Jews.
The Jerusalem Great Synagogue and its Chief Chazzan invite world renowned guest Chazzanim to officiate on several Shabbatot during the year. The Synagogue also, from time to time, hosts young Chazzanim at the start of their career.
